Durkin Family Records
Collection
Identifier: UA-121
Scope and Contents
The Durkin Family collection consists largely of family photographs and correspondence to Mrs. Edmund J. Durkin, Sr. (nee Mary Blaise Walsh, 1883-1968). The first group of photographs are family portraits of Edmund J. Durkin, Sr. (1878-1949), Edmund J. Durkin (1911-1976), Catherine M. Durkin (b.1915), Helen M. Durkin (b. 1916), and Thomas M. (1923). Photographs of Mercyhurst include the 1938 May Crowing, photos of some Mercy sisters, and misc. ones.
Mrs. Durkin was a graduate of St. Josephs Academy, Titusville, in 1902, and the collection includes her diploma and commencement program as well as photographs of the graduating class and the school. There is also a tape, a recording of a tape and record made in 1966, of Mrs. Durkin’s salutatory address and several poems she had to memorize in school.
The correspondence in the collection is all to Mrs. Durkin, except for one letter to her brother, Maurice Walsh. The letters are mainly from Mercy Sisters, especially Sr. Mercedes, and dated from November 1906-May 1949, besides several undated ones.
Newspaper clippings are also included in that record Catherine and Helen Durkin’s activities after their graduation from Mercyhurst (1936 and 1938), including several alumnae events.
An interview of Catherine M. Durkin was conducted February 29, 1976, which documents Mercyhurst College history during the 1920’s and 1930’s.
